Phillip Wardlaw Bates Jr., 79, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

Born on September 5, 1946, in James Island, SC, Phillip was the son of the late Mary Ratliff Bates and the late Philip Bates.

Phillip Bates a proud veteran, devoted family man, and respected member of his community passed away leaving behind a legacy of honor, hard work and dedication.

Phillip was the beloved husband of Faye Bates, and grandfather to Robert A. Tanner.

Known as a true "jack of all trades," Phillip could fix, build, or restore just about anything he said his mind to. His strong work ethic and willingness to help others earned him the admiration of everyone who knew him. He took great pride in his country, cared deeply for his family, and contributing to his community with humility and strength.

Phillip also had a lifelong passion for music and classic cars. For many years, he shared his musical talents as a member of the band "Cruisematics," performing for friends and audiences alike. Whether he was on stage, lending a helping hand, or offering words of wisdom, Phillip made a lasting impact on those around him.

He will be remembered as an honorable and dedicated man whose presence brought comfort, strength, and joy to many. His memory will live on forever in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. Phillip Bates will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, West Ashley. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens in North Charleston, SC.
