Robert "Bob" Edward Baldwin, 87, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Born on March 31, 1938, in Newark, NJ, Bob was the son of the late Ellen Nater Baldwin and the late Alfred William Baldwin.
Bob began his academic journey with an undergraduate degree at the Citadel on a football scholarship, playing tackle. He later pursued and attained his Ph. D. at the University of South Carolina. He returned to the Citadel in 1966 to teach biology and physiology, eventually becoming Department of Biology Chair in 1982, a position he held until he retired in 2001. When not teaching, Bob was busy being the faculty advisor to the Citadel Crew Team.
Bob enjoyed boating and fishing with his family, building and flying remote controlled airplanes, making surprisingly delicate baskets from pine needles, making seine and cast nets by hand to support his fishing excursions, as well as doing various woodworking projects.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Faith Donskey. Bob is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Dixon Baldwin; daughters Nancy Carnell (Michael) and Rebecca Ball (Robert) and son Brooks Baldwin, as well as grandchildren Christina and Colin Carnell and Michael Ball. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Staples (Carlton).
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm, on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation, 2501 Bees Ferry Road, Charleston, SC 29414. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Disabilities Foundation of Charleston County.
