Robert Roy Smith, 97, of Pisgah Forest, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026. He was the son of Roy Wilbur Smith and Edith Wood Smith of Wilmington, Delaware. He was a graduate from the University of Delaware and was a proud Blue Hen. He retired to Pisgah Forest in 1999, after a 39- year career with the E.I. DuPont Engineering Department. During that period, he resided in eight states and four foreign countries. He was a U.S. Army veteran, retiring from the U.S. Army Reserve with over 28 years of service.
Often referred to as the "Energizer Bunny", he loved to be active. He spent his time playing golf, working on his property, going to the beach and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed all sports but in addition to the Blue Hens, he followed Duke basketball, the Phillies and the Philadelphia Eagles.
During his retirement he was active in many groups and community services. He was a member of the Armstrong Masonic Lodge #26, Brevard Elks Lodge #1768, Meals on Wheels, and the N.C. Adopt- a-Highway Program. In addition he was a volunteer in the AARP Tax Assistance Program, Brevard Music Camp and the Carolina Mountain Trail Program. Lastly, he was a devoted member of the Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church for over 30 years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Doris C. Smith; his sister, Nell S. Saulsbury; his daughter, Donna S. Shreve; and his loving companion of 8 years, Freida Jackson. He is survived by his brother Kenneth Smith; son Eric Smith and wife Cynthia; his daughter Terri Tooley and husband Britt; his grandson, Gordon Ross Tooley and wife Amy and their daughter Charlie; his granddaughter, Jordan Tooley Couchot and husband Carter.
A service at Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026 with Rev. Keith Thompson officiating. A reception will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels of Brevard, PO Box 485, Brevard, NC, 28712.
