Ronald Carlton Herman

Ronald C. Herman, GySgt (Ret), USMC, 83, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025. Born on August 6, 1941, in Penn Yan, New York, Ron lived a life of service, adventure, and unwavering devotion to his family and the outdoors.

A proud Marine Corps veteran, Ron served with distinction for 20 years, including during the Vietnam War, specializing in data processing. After retiring in 1980, he continued his career at First Federal Savings and Loan on Broad Street in Charleston for 25 years, earning respect for his expertise and dedication. Ron was an active member of the Data Processors Management Association (DPMA) in Charleston, where he held leadership roles and built lasting connections.

Ron’s zest for life was evident in his passions. He loved hunting deer, upland birds, and small game, canoeing serene waters, and mastering various shooting disciplines. A devoted fan of Western movies and TV shows, he found true joy on his Wadmalaw Island farm, where he tended fields of Silver Queen sweet corn—shared generously with family, friends, and local wildlife. He enjoyed mowing the pastures and discing the fields on his Kubota and John Deere’s…and caring for the horses, goats, ducks, chickens, and geese.

Ron thrived on challenges, from playing baseball and football in his youth to slow-pitch softball in the Marines, canoeing with his son’s in Lunga Reservoir and the rapids of the Rappahannock, and even white-water rafting down the Colorado River.

His love for the Marine Corps, his farm, and the outdoors was matched only by his devotion to his family. Ron is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Mae Williamson (Herman); his sons, Ronald C. Herman Jr. (Christine) and Byran K. Herman (Angela); his grandchildren, Natasha R. Streets (Andrew), Brittany L. Herman, and Garret M. Herman; and his great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Abigail, and Jacob Streets. He is also survived by his siblings, Glenda and Steven Herman, and was predeceased by his brother, Larry Herman.

Known for his quiet strength, sharp wit, and fierce patriotism, Ron now stands tall among the Marine heroes of Derna, Belleau Wood, Iwo Jima, Khe Sanh, Lebanon, and Fallujah.
