Roy McMillian Stockman, 99 of Summerville, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 24, 2022.  Born on February 9, 1923, in Greenwood, SC was a Son of the late Mary Towles Stockman and Andrew C. Stockman.  Roy graduated from Greenwood High School, Greenwood SC in 1939. After high school he worked with his father at the family gas station before attending Clemson Military School. In December of 1942 after the bombing on Pearl Harbor, Roy enlisted in the United States Navy serving as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class. After being Honorably Discharged from the Navy in December 1945, Roy worked as an Electrician at the Self Mills in Greenwood SC where he met the love of his life Glenn. Roy and Glenn were married in September of 1946. They welcomed a son Roy Michael in October of 1947 and welcomed their second son Andrew Glenn in 1950.

While Roy continued his work at the mill, he also attended classes at Lander to finish his bachelor’s degree. While preparing to attend Georgia Tech University to pursue an Electrical Engineering degree he felt the call to become a minister. With the full support of his wife, he moved his family to Atlanta, GA so Roy could attend Emory University to pursue a master’s in theology degree. During his time at Emory, Roy would travel back to Greenwood South Carolina on Sunday mornings to preach at Mt. Carmel UMC and Ebenezer UMC. Upon completion of Seminary School his first appointment in the South Carolina Methodist Conference was to Laurens UMC. Roy went on to serve at Mauldin UMC, Walterboro UMC, Grace UMC, Charleston District Superintendent and finished out his ministry at Anderson UMC. Roy retired in 1989 to Charleston SC to be near his children. In retirement, he taught the Sue Knight Sunday School Class at Bethany for 19 years. Roy enjoyed many hobbies from gardening to wood working to needle arts. He proudly displayed his work throughout the home he and Glenn shared for 76 years.  However, he found the most joy spending time with his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. Roy is preceded in death by his father Andrew W. Stockman, mother Mary Towles Stockman and his younger brother AC Stockman.

Roy is survived by his loving and devoted wife Glenn M. Stockman, son, Michael Stockman (Roxanne) son Andrew Stockman (Kate) daughter Mary Anne Tillman (Eddie) Grandson Trey Tillman (Diana) Granddaughter Taylor Werner (Tommy) and
Granddaughter Caroline Tillman (Daniel) Grandson Allen Stockman (Alaina) Granddaughter Paige Stockman, Great grandchildren, Andrew Carroll, Addison Werner, Luca Tillman.

The family will welcome friends on Thursday 9/1/2022 at 1pm followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm at Bethany United Methodist Church 118 W. Third St. Summerville, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association,
American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association.
