Sally Porter Douglas, 89, of West Columbia, SC passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026.
Born on March 29, 1937, in Columbia, SC, Sally was the beloved daughter of J.C. “Sapp” Porter and Thelma P. Porter. She spent her life devoted to family, work, and serving her church.
Sally graduated from Brooklyn-Cayce High School and then went to work for Sears and Roebuck. She went on to later teach kindergarten at Springdale Baptist Church Preschool and then to Helena Chemical, where she retired with over 32 years of service. She began her career at Helena as a secretary and completed her career as a regional sales manager.
Throughout her life, Sally enjoyed entertaining and cooking, especially Sunday lunches with her family. Those who knew Sally will remember some of her favorite sayings, “age is just a number and mine is unlisted”; “I brought you into this world and I can take you out” said to her two boys; and “the house doesn’t celebrate the holidays” meaning she did not want appliances as gifts.
Above all else, Sally cherished time spent with the love of her life, Bobby. They were married for 69 years until his passing on June 30 of this year. Sally’s other loves were her two sons, their wives (“the daughters she never had”) and her grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Mama Sally.”
Sally is survived by her two sons, Rocky (Lynne) Douglas and Steven (Alice) Douglas; grandchildren Brock Douglas and Bethany (Ben) Proffitt; great-grandchildren Jack Douglas and Eden Proffitt; a brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sally is preceded in death by her husband Bobby Douglas, her parents, and her sisters Gerry Berry and Bobbie Jean Lawson.
Services to celebrate Sally’s life will be held at Springdale Baptist Church, 357 Wattling Road, West Columbia, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 as follows:
1:00 PM Family will receive friends
