Salvatore Anthony Chiaramida, M.D.

Salvatore Anthony Chiaramida, M.D. of Mount Pleasant, SC, a distinguished and dedicated physician, and cardiologist, passed away on August 30, 2023, at the age of 74. He was born in New York City, NY, to Joseph Chiaramida, M.D., and Dina DiBlasi on September 15,1948. His Italian heritage and Christian faith had significant importance in his life.

Educated by The Xavierian brothers, Dr. Chiaramida graduated from Xaverian High School Brooklyn, NY with honors in 1966. He was a scholar and an athlete.

Educated by the Jesuits, Dr. Chiaramida graduated from Fordham University Bronx, NY in 1970 with a BS in Chemistry which included one year at Columbia University in New York City in Chemical Engineering.

In 1974, Dr. Chiaramida received his medical degree from New York Medical College. 1974 to 1979 his graduate training included an Internship, Residency and Fellowship in Cardiology was completed at Cornell Cooperating Hospitals; North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, Long Island, New York, and Memorial Sloan Ketting Cancer Institute in New York City.

Driven with a passion for medicine and unwavering commitment, he dedicated his life to caring for his patients with compassion, empathy, and expertise. Dr. Chiaramida’s sense of duty and his exceptional skills as a physician earned him the profound respect and gratitude of his patients and colleagues alike.

 Distinguished positions of his medical career include:

Chief of Cardiology - Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy, NJ  1979-1989

Chief of Cardiology at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center, Bronx, NY 1989-2000

Served as active Member, Board of Trustees, Catholic Healthcare System, NY 1995-2001

In 2000 Holy Year, Dr. Chiaramida, as the Physician in Charge with the Catholic HealthCare System, archdiocese of New York, accompanied patients on a pilgrimage to Rome which culminated in an audience with Pope John Paull II.

Professor of Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina, 2001 – 2016

Director of Coronary Care Unit, Medical University of South Carolina, 2002 – 20016

During his medical tenures, Dr. Chiaramida was a member of 16 Governance Boards, held 6 teaching appointments, published 67 abstracts, completed 11 Research Support Investigations, co-authored with Cardiology Fellows 40 Investigations, helmed 12 clinical trials, and was awarded one medical patent in 2012.

Dr. Chiaramida was a Fellow of The American College of Physicians and The American College of Cardiology. He is listed in Who’s Who in America in 2005 and Who’s Who in the World in 2010.

He was acclaimed in New York magazine, Best Doctors in New York in 1998 and 1999.

Dr, Chiaramida cherished the time spent with his family. He was a loving husband to his wife Susan of 53 years. He was a loving and devoted father to his two surviving sons Todd Joseph (Sarah) and Tory Andrew. He took pride in their growth, guidance, education, and achievements. He especially enjoyed traveling the world with his family, the Broadway Theater in New York and was a longtime fan of the New York Yankees and New York Jets.

Dr. Chiaramida is survived by his sister Annita Chiaramida Rao (Anthony), his brother Dr. Anthony Chiaramida (Elena), his sister-in-law Cynthia Postula Riggio (Joseph), and a loving niece and nephews and 2 adoring grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his cherished parents and his grandparents Anthony and Emilia DiBlasi.

The family kindly requests donations to be made in Dr. Salvatore Chiaramida’s memory to the Heart and Vascular Department, of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) by contacting the MUSC Foundation at 843-792-2677.

The family will greet friends and family at the visitation on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The Memorial Service will begin at 7:00 pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral & Cremation Mount Pleasant located at 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mount Pleasant, SC.
