Samuel “Sam” Girardeau Limbaker, 81, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2026, at home in the presence of family and friends. Sam was born September 22, 1944 in Charleston, SC. Son of the late Isaac Girardeau and Mary Lewis Limbaker. He grew up in Mt. Pleasant and after graduating from Bishop England High School he attended Trident Technical College. Upon graduating, he worked for the Charleston County School District and then became the proud business owner of Limbaker Heating & Air Conditioning from 1982 until 2008 when he sold his business and retired to a life of fishing. He always said he was not a fisherman, he was a catcherman.
When Sam was not volunteering with the Knights of Columbus, Christ Our King, or Brith Sholom Beth Israel Congregation, he could be found in a local creek on his boat, that he called a Surface Attack Vessel. Sam was a life-time member of the East Cooper Outboard Motor Club. He spent many hours with his friends at the bird deck enjoying good laughs and sunsets. He had a passion for history and especially relished participating in battle reenactments of the War Between the States as a member of the Washington Light Artillery. Sam was a member of the Elks Lodge in West Ashley and loved line dancing, especially Boot Scootin' Boogie, on Tuesday nights. As a member of the Refrigeration Service Engineer Society (RSES), he enjoyed socializing with his fellow HVAC technicians.
Sam is survived by his loving partner of over 26 years, Barbara Schwartz, his son, Samuel Travis Limbaker (Wendy) and his daughters Donna Peagler (Kevin) and Debra Carroll (Brian) all of Mt Pleasant, SC. He dearly loved his granddaughters, Cadie L. Seria (Salvadore), Caroline Limbaker and Lauren Peagler. Sam is also survived by his brother, Francis Limbaker (deceased spouse, Margie Limbaker) and his sister, Martha Ann Freeman (deceased spouse, Johnny Freeman).
There will be a Memorial Service for Sam Thursday, July 30 at McAlister-Smith, 1520 Rifle Range Rd, Mt. Pleasant at 10:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO), 1145 Six Mile Rd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29466, or to a charity of your choice.
