Sarah "Betty" Elizabeth Butler

Sarah “Betty” Elizabeth Butler passed peacefully at her home in Meggett, SC, on Saturday, July 29, 2023. A lifelong lowcountry resident, she was a beloved sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Betty was born on August 4, 1939, to the late Robert Hampton and the late Agnes Keenan Butler.

She attended St. Angela Academy (Girls School) and graduated from Murray High School in Charleston, SC. She married Norman W. Butler on August 29, 1959, and had five children.

Betty worked as a supervisor for the US government in communication and retired in 2002. She was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Mary’s Church on Yonge’s Island.

Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by her former husband, Norman W. Butler; her adored oldest son, Billy; stepfather, Edward Laroache Grimball and her sister, Barbara Barrs.

She is survived by four children: Teresa Loughridge (Rick), Robert Butler, Travis Butler and Kevin Butler (Sydney); seven grandchildren: Brandon Butler, Seth Ashmore, Brandon Butler, Trevor Butler, Christine Rickards, Riley Butler and Emerson Butler; three great-grandsons: Aiden, Cason and Emmett; and five siblings: Cherry Constable, Robert Butler, John Butler, Mary Richardson and Rita Postell.

Betty was a loving soul who never let life’s difficulties change her optimistic and generous spirit. She will be dearly missed.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 4255 S-165, Yonges Island, SC 29449.

A graveside service will follow at Christ St. Paul's Cemetery, 4981 State Road, S-101160, Yonges Island, SC 29449.

Following the burial, the family will receive friends at Christ St. Paul's Church, across from the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
