Susan Hitt Brooks, 77, of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2025.
Born on November 5, 1947, in Washington, DC, Susan was a daughter of the late Elizabeth Wilson Hitt and Hurley Franklin Hitt.
Susan attended the University of South Carolina and Palmer College, where she laid the foundation for a remarkable career spanning over 30 years at the Medical University of South Carolina. She dedicated herself to fostering global connections and supporting international students. Susan opened her home to host international students and their families, often going above and beyond to secure medical care and equipment for uninsured students. Susan’s legacy is marked by her many personal and professional achievements, most notably the 1999 Outstanding State Employee Award.
Her passions were as vibrant as her spirit. Susan cherished spending time with family and friends, immersing herself in Bible study, community service, travel, sailing, theater, and opera. Her love for the arts and her Faith shone brightly in all that she did. A devoted member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, Susan was deeply engaged in her community, serving with enthusiasm in P.E.O. International, Kiwanis International, and numerous other organizations and committees. Her commitment to service extended far and wide through multiple international and domestic mission trips, where she touched countless lives with her generosity and compassion.
Known by all as a true people person, Susan radiated warmth and love for her friends, family, and above all, God.
Susan is preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Brooks; parents, Hurley and Elizabeth Hitt; and brother, Allen F. Hitt.
Susan is survived by her nephew Ben Ichiro Hitt; niece, Fuji Fiddie (Wayne Myers); grand-nephews, Sterling Fiddie (Sierra Fiddie), Forrest Fiddie (Alexis Fiddie), Corbin Fiddie (Lauren Fiddie); great grandnephew, Waylon Fiddie; and great grandniece, Chiyo Fiddie.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 25, 2025, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation - James Island, 347 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 10:00 AM at 413 Geddes Avenue, Charleston, SC 29407. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road, Charleston, SC 29412.
