Suzanne C. Bangston

November 7, 1942 — April 20, 2022

Suzanne C. Bangston, 79, of Kiawah Island, SC, wife of John F. Bangston, entered into eternal rest on April 20, 2022, surrounded by her family. She will be remembered for her passion for life and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

Born on November 7, 1942 in Southampton, NY, Suzanne was a daughter of the late Maurice B. Cunningham and Hazel H. Cunningham. She graduated from Mercy High School on Eastern Long Island, NY in 1960, as part of the school's first graduating class.

Suzanne married the love of her life, John Bangston, on June 29, 1963. They spent six decades growing together and enjoying the life they created, including raising three children.

A woman with many interests, Suzanne started her career as an insurance agent at Cunningham Insurance in Southampton, NY. With a passion for reading, she later opened and managed Bangston's Book Annex in Hampton Bays, NY. Suzanne returned to college and graduated class salutatorian from Dowling College on Long Island, NY in 1995 with a degree in Special Education. Suzanne moved to South Carolina and worked as a Special Education teacher in the Barnwell School District.

Besides her parents, Suzanne is preceded in death by two of her of her sisters, Lisa Cunningham and Sally Cunningham; and her brother-in-law, Robert Gagnon.

Suzanne is survived by her husband, John Bangston; her children and their spouses John and Kim Bangston, Round Rock, TX, Kevin and Maggie Bangston, Seabrook Island, SC, Elizabeth and Glenn Hutto, Columbia, SC; and her four beloved grandsons, Robert (Thack) Hutto, Andrew Hutto, Harper Bangston and Rhys Bangston. She is also survived by three of her siblings, Thomas Cunningham, Huntington, NY, Timothy Cunningham, Panama City, Panama and Maureen Cunningham, Pelham, NY; her nieces and nephews Elizabeth Gagnon Phalnikar (Rahul), Katherine Gagnon (Brian Leistman), Douglas Doucette Jr., Jack Doucette, Timothy Doucette and Julia Doucette; and her grand-niece Eleanor Phalnikar.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 25, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3871 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, Johns Island, SC 29455. Burial will follow in the church's cemetery. The family will welcome visitors before the mass starting at 10:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sea Island Habitat, 2545 Bohicket Road, Johns Island, SC 29455 (www.seaislandhabitat.org) or Our Lady of Mercy Outreach, 1684 Brownswood Road, Johns Island, SC 29455.
