Listen to Obituary

Thomas Lee Wood, Sr. "Tom", 70, of Moncks Corner, SC, passed away at MUSC on Tuesday, August 19th, 2025, after a lengthy battle with liver disease.

Born October 7, 1954, in Richmond, Virginia, he was the son of the late Roy Conway Wood, Sr. and the late Charlotte Lorraine Tyler Wood.

Tom attended the University of South Carolina-Beaufort for two years, where he played basketball. He then went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina in 1979. He married Betty Ann Johnson the following year, and together they built a beautiful life. He spent 33 years as a teacher and coach with the Charleston County School District. Tom was an avid supporter of youth sports and mentoring young people. After his retirement in 2012, he found his passion coaching his grandchildren in their various sports of choice, working part-time at Publix, then later as a trivia DJ. He remained an active member of the University of South Carolina Basketball Legends Club, and joined Pinopolis Community Church. He also spent quality time traveling with his family.

Tom loved all things sports, dancing, educating, and embracing his role as "Santa", both to his family and around the community. Most of all, he enjoyed spending every minute he could with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was known for his silly, yet somewhat believable, answers to almost any question, and his fun demeanor. He never met a stranger and was a friend to all he met. Tom was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather (known as "Koaladad/KoolDad/Papa/Great Grandpa Santa"), brother, uncle, coach and friend.

He is survived by his two daughters, Brooke Ashley McCullough (husband, Jason) of Waverly Hall, GA, and Blair Alynn Mace (husband, Ryan) of Goose Creek, SC; one son, Thomas Lee "T.J." Wood, Jr. (wife, Amy) of Moncks Corner, SC; brothers: David Wesley Wood (wife, Betty), Wayne Arthur Wood (wife, Charlotte), John Alan Wood (wife, Laura); six grandchildren: Jenna Danielle Prater (husband, Walter), Jarret DeWayne McCullough, Beck Austin McCullough, Thomas Lee "Trey" Wood III, Randall Bryce "Andy" Wood, and Raelyn Ann Mace; two great-grandchildren: Evalynn Gabriella Prater and Elizabeth Ann "Ellie" Prater; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Ann "Betty Ann" Wood (Johnson); parents, Roy Conway Wood Sr., and Charlotte Lorraine Tyler Wood, and his brother, Roy Conway Wood, Jr. (wife, Wanda).
