William Smith

William Steven Smith, 74, of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 19, 2023, surrounded by his loving family while listening to his favorite music.

Born on June 26, 1949, in New Rochelle, NY, Bill was the son of Dorothea Smith (Dawkins) and the late William J. Smith, Jr.

Bill was many things in life - a successful business consultant in New York City, an entrepreneur as well as realtor in Charleston, and a devoted Roman Catholic of Irish ancestry. Most important to Bill were his roles as son to Dorothea and William J. Smith, Jr.; brother to his four sisters (Colleen Patterson, Kathy Lawless, Alison Pike, and Laura Colby); husband to Nancy Smith (Mayer); father to his five children (Kevin Smith, Meegan Insley, Alex Smith, Dan Smith, Sydney Kirchner); uncle to his two dozen nieces and nephews; and grandfather to his seven grandchildren (Isabelle, Margaret, and Elizabeth Insley; Eva Smith; Hannah Smith; Riley and Olive Kirchner), the youngest having been born just last week in time to meet Bill. Bill also measured his success in life by the strength and longevity of his prized friendships with the world's smartest, funniest, and most interesting people from coast to coast and across the Atlantic.

Bill is preceded in death by his father William J. Smith, Jr. and his first son Kevin Charles Smith.

The family will receive friends and family from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home 1520 Rifle Range Rd. Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

A Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 26, at Saint Mary of the Annunciation at 93 Hasell Street, Charleston, SC. The burial will be held the following week at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York.
