Angela Bettina Stiepel Case, age 67, wife of the late Stanley Wright Case, peacefully passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at her Mount Pleasant home surrounded by her devoted family and friends after a very brief, but valiant battle with stomach cancer.
Angi was born May 8, 1956, in Biddeford, Maine, as eldest daughter to Erhard and Margret (Krasemann) Stiepel after they immigrated from Hamburg, Germany in 1954. In 1959, the Stiepels settled in Clemson, SC, where Angi was a 1974 graduate of D.W. Daniel High School, Central, SC. In 1978, Angi graduated from the University of Georgia/Athens with a degree in journalism which took her to North Augusta, GA, as TV anchor at WRDW-Channel 12. She later lived in Stone Mountain, GA, and worked as an associate producer at WAGA-TV in Atlanta. GA. In the fall of 1988, she was hired as part of a team that created Atlanta’s first 10 p.m. newscast on WGNX-TV.
Angi left WGNX-TV to embark on a 20+ year career at CNN, Atlanta, as lead writer. There she met her soulmate, Stan, one of the original CNN radio anchors. Their first date was a 2002 Atlanta Braves game (and they beat those pesky NY Mets)! They married in Atlanta on September 13, 2003, and shared eight beautiful years together until Stan’s untimely death in a November 2011 car accident. She moved to Mount Pleasant in 2013 and became very involved in the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, especially with the Hope House residents where she shared her journalism gift as author of their monthly newsletter. She was also a loving and vital component in caring for her parents after their relocation to the Lowcountry.
Left to honor Angi and remember her abundant love are her sister, Christine (C.Wayne) Osborne, Jr.; and brother, Norbert (Patricia) Stiepel; adoring nephews, C.Wayne (Mandy) Osborne, III; Kyle (Maybre) Osborne, and Noah Stiepel; precious great-nephew and nieces, C.Wayne “Chase” IV, McKay, and Maddie Osborne; and Sumner and Aggie Osborne, all of Mount Pleasant, SC; sister-in-law Linda (Gene) Goodnight and family, Wewoka, Oklahoma; beloved Godmother Bettina (Krasemann) Wex, Hamburg, Germany; cousins: Heinzi (Franca) Stiepel and family, Mission Viejo, California; John (Teri) Stiepel, Arizona; Bettina (Kai) Heukamp and family, and Philip Gohler and family, Germany; Caroline (Tim Upson) Gohler, London; Ascan Wex, Hamburg; Geseke Wex and family, Munich. Angi is also survived by her WonderWorks co-workers, esp. Schnooks-Elizabeth Darby; numerous friends and colleagues around the world; the Wakendaw Buncoettes; her Party Mint Pickleball pals; and incredible, helpful, and thoughtful neighbors. Tenderly, Dog Mom-Angi leaves yummy treats and heavenly ear rubs to her adored pup, Cooper.
Angi was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stan; parents, Erhard, and Margret Stiepel; father-in-law, Frank Case (Prague, Oklahoma); brother-in-law, Steve Case (Shawnee, Oklahoma); Drs. Onkel Heinrich and Tante Christina Stiepel (California); Tante Barbara Gohler (Germany); and nephew, Travis Goodnight (Mississippi).
Some of Angi’s favorite things included: skiing and boating on Lake Hartwell in Swishy; travel to or with relatives, friends, or colleagues; long walks, hiking, biking, and kayaking with Stan in our National Parks; tomahawk chops for her beloved Atlanta Braves until the last inning; cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs – from Herschel Walker to the last two National
Championship teams; and helping to professionally organize anyone needing her detailed expertise. However, her most precious roles were as “Aunt Angi” to Wayne-O, Kyle, and Noah (and extended to Mandy and Maybre); “Christmas shopper-extraordinaire” every year in her nephews’ youth; WonderWorks “elf” and gift wrap expert; the most loving and joy-filled friend and SIL/Sister-in-Law to Linda and Patricia; and her very treasured role as “another grandmother” to the Osborne grandchildren! Sweet Angi was always a gracious and welcoming hostess, never missed sending a birthday or anniversary card, or thank you note; and, rest assured, she will ensure everyone enroute to Paradise will know how to eat M&M’s properly: by color only!
Sincere and heartfelt thank you’s to Charleston Oncology, esp. Dr. David Ellison, Andrea, and staff; Dr. Daniel Kirchoff and staff; Dr. Chris Hawk, the caring ICU staff at Roper St. Francis Hospital; Roper Hospice; and loving caregivers Pilar Senior Service, LLC, esp. Pilar Kriegel-Haeflinger and Yvonne Allen.
A Thanksgiving Celebration of Angi’s Life will be held at 3:30 PM on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben Street, Mount Pleasant.
Following her husband’s death, Angi created a scholarship in Stan’s name at his alma mater, the University of Central Oklahoma to help young journalists find their “voice” in radio and TV. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Stan Case scholarship foundation at www.stanleycasescholarship.org.
